Kids Against Hunger™ consists of teams of people who volunteer their time, energy and finances to help bag life-saving food. When you volunteer your time or resources, we are able to save money that can then be applied toward the purchase of more ingredients for food. Packaging the food is a wonderful, fulfilling way to make a real difference! You can see the progress with each bag you package and box up. From the very young to senior citizens, any group can be involved in this process.

You may belong to a volunteer group, such as a civic organization, youth group, or church group, and have a passion for serving the needs of others. Volunteers come together to package food. For 25 cents per meal you can work to eliminate hunger and starvation in the world today. This includes 23 cents for ingredients and 2 cents for shipping costs. Kids Against Hunger of Des Moines is ready to assist you in organizing a packaging event!

There are 6 steps to hosting a meal packaging event:

1. Start fundraising for your event. (Each meal costs 25 cents to purchase, pack, and ship. One box costs $54. If you have 10 volunteers packaging meals for 2 hours it would cost $1,000 and you would package 4,000 meals. That is each volunteer raising $100 to package meals for 2 hours and feed 4,000 mouths!!)
2. Have a group minimum of 10 people
3. Select a few dates that will work for your group
4. Email or call our office to confirm date(s) will work
5. Send check for your packaging event 30 days in advance so that your supplies can be purchased
6. On the day of your event, arrive at the discussed time, a Kids Against Hunger of Des Moines staff person will help you register and explain the process. The process is simple and you don't need to be 'handy' or have any special skills to take part. All the tools and materials you will need will be set up and waiting for you!

Come Volunteer for Cans for Kids Cans for Kids is sorting plastic, glass, and aluminum cans and bottles for Patterson Redemption Center, for each can or bottle we sort they give us 5 cents, which all goes to Kids Against Hunger of Des Moines. In 2007 we raised close to $5,000, which is 20,149 meals to help starving children.
