Earlier in May, I traveled with a group of experienced missionaries to Haiti, where we have sent some meals that we packaged from Kids Against Hunger. It was a life-changing experience. The people are constantly, actively engaged in looking for food. They live in makeshift huts spread out over everywhere, as far as the eye can see. Markets are set up on the side of the road, selling rice, beans and mangos. But there are not many transactions taking place. It seems that no one has money. Unemployment is 90%.
Thousands of people scraping out existence, turning into hundreds of thousands in the distance, and millions farther on. It is unimaginable.
Then an oasis, a mission with a school, uniformed children lining up for classes. Many walk from miles around. Well-behaved, bright children. They want an education and have goals, like becoming doctors and helping their communities.
In one town we visited, there is one doctor for a town of 100,000 people. There is no electricity, no paved roads, no water supply. No government services. No industry, no jobs. This is where our meals are going. They are feeding the school children. They are meals that you made.
It is a good place to start. The mission is to feed the enthused children who can learn to help themselves and their community. The hope for the community and for the country is in the children.
My mission now is to make more meals. I want to double the meals that we are making, and then double that.
You are helping, and you have helped. What you have done has made a difference in their lives. You can continue to make a difference, by volunteering, by collecting cans, spreading the word, and bringing others to volunteer. If we each make a small contribution to the cause, we can make a big difference together.
Thank you for all that you have done.
